Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric Surgery

In bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, modifications are made to the digestive system to facilitate weight loss. This could be through limiting the food intake or the absorption of nutrients, or both. Patients undergo weight loss surgery when alternate methods, such as exercise, do not work or patients face serious medical risks due to obesity.

At Medcy, we know that undergoing surgery for weight loss can be physically and mentally challenging. That is why our team of highly experienced bariatric surgeons is dedicated to providing personalised care through every step of your weight loss journey.

Types of Bariatric Surgery at Medcy

Bariatric surgery refers to a range of medical procedures, each working differently to promote weight loss. The following weight loss surgeries are conducted at Medcy Hospitals.

Gastric Sleeve

A gastric sleeve surgery, also called sleeve gastrectomy, removes a significant portion of the stomach to reduce it to the size of a slender, banana-shaped pouch or sleeve. It is done to reduce the amount of food intake, leading to reduced calorie consumption which results in significant weight loss.

Gastric Bypass

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a surgical procedure that creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects the pouch directly to the small intestine. The food goes through the small pouch to the intestine without passing through the rest of the stomach and a small portion of the small intestine. It is an effective procedure since it limits the capacity of the stomach and the absorption of nutrients by the small intestine.

Gastric Band Surgery

Gastric band surgery aims to restrict food intake by placing a silicone band around the top section of the stomach. The band is an adjustable device that can increase or decrease the opening of that stomach section through fluid injections. The size of the opening between the stomach pouch and the rest of the stomach influences the sensation of being full. A smaller opening results in consuming less food and calories.

Gastric Balloon Treatment

An Intragastric Balloon treatment is a minimally invasive procedure where a saline-filled silicone balloon is placed in the stomach. It helps patients feel fuller much faster, leading to limited food consumption. It is a short-term medical implant that works with a long-term diet to facilitate weight loss.

Weight Loss Surgery

Various other types of surgeries boost weight loss. Each surgery works in its own way to modify food intake and calorie consumption. These weight loss surgeries display long-term results only if the patient continues to eat healthily, exercise regularly, and take their nutrient supplements as prescribed.
