Nephrology

Medcy Hospitals is proud to provide specialised care for individuals with kidney-related conditions. Nephrology is a branch of medicine that caters to diagnosing and treating kidney conditions. A nephrologist is a kidney specialist who treats and restores kidney function among adults and children.

At Medcy Hospitals, our team of highly skilled nephrologists and medical professionals are dedicated to delivering personalised treatment plans that encourage better kidney function, quicker relief and improved quality of life.

Types of Nephrology Services at Medcy Hospitals

Patients can undergo the following nephrology treatments at Medcy Hospitals:

Donor Lap Nephrectomy

A donor nephrectomy refers to a living donor kidney transplant. A laparoscopic nephrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that operates the transplant through small incisions made in the donor and the receiver’s body, through which the kidney is removed and transplanted.

Kidney Transplant (Living Related Donor)

A living donor kidney transplant takes a healthy kidney from a living donor and transplants it into the receiver’s body, whose kidneys have stopped functioning. Unlike a laparoscopic nephrectomy, a regular kidney transplant is an open surgery that involves major incisions created to provide better surgical access for the surgeon.

Hydronephrosis Treatment

Hydronephrosis occurs when urine builds up in one or both kidneys, causing them to stretch and swell. Treatment involves relieving symptoms like draining urine, addressing underlying causes like kidney stones, and restoring kidney function.

Kidney Dialysis

When kidneys stop functioning properly, patients require external dialysis to filter the blood of excess fluid and harmful waste. Patients can get two types of kidney dialysis: haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

In peritoneal dialysis, the abdomen’s inner lining, the peritoneum, acts as the filter through which the blood is filtered using a cleansing solution. The solution filters waste products from the blood. After some time, the solution is drained from the abdomen and discarded.

Haemodialysis

During hemodialysis, the blood is circulated through an external machine, called a dialyser, for filtration before returning it to the body. The machine is also sometimes referred to as an artificial kidney and works as an external filter for the body.

Kidney Stone Removal

Kidney stones are mineral and salt deposits that form inside the kidneys. Some stones pass on their own, while others require surgery. Four treatments can be used to remove kidney stones – ureteroscopy, shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, or open surgery.

Dialysis and Acute Haemodialysis

Sometimes due to an injury, patients require immediate dialysis services, which is known as acute hemodialysis. It helps stabilise and support kidney function in cases where the kidney is not able to function properly on its own and requires external dialysis help.

Interventional Nephrology and Fistula Salvage Procedures

Interventional Nephrology focuses on kidney ultrasonography, ultrasound-guided renal biopsy, peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, and other minimally invasive procedures to manage complications related to dialysis access, such as fistula salvage procedures.

Preventive Nephrology and Screening Programme

Preventive nephrology aims to identify and address early signs of kidney disease through screening programs allowing nephrologists to see what is happening with the kidney. If the kidney struggles to function properly, preventive measures can be taken early to mitigate the condition.
