Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure that creates small incisions in the body to insert a laparoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera, and other specialized instruments to diagnose and treat abdomen and pelvis conditions.

Laparoscopic surgery offers various benefits over traditional open surgery, including reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal scarring due to small incisions.

Medcy Hospitals employs laparoscopic techniques and a team of skilled surgeons to ensure successful surgeries, quick recovery and faster return to normal life. We offer different types of laparoscopic surgeries at Medcy.

Types of Laparoscopic Surgeries at Medcy Hospitals

Out of the different laparoscopic surgeries conducted at Medcy, here are two of the main ones.

Splenectomy

A splenectomy is the surgical removal of the spleen, which is a fist-sized organ located under the left rib cage near the stomach. In some cases, a partial splenectomy, involving the removal of only a portion of the spleen, may be performed.

During a laparoscopic splenectomy, a laparoscope is inserted into the abdomen via three to four small incisions. After locating the spleen on the monitor, different surgical instruments are passed through the openings. The surgeon detaches the spleen from surrounding structures and the body’s blood supply. Finally, the spleen is safely removed through the largest surgical opening.

Umbilical Hernia Repair

A hernia occurs when an internal body part or organ protrudes through a weak part of the tissue wall or the muscle. An umbilical hernia is a pouch that develops in the abdomen, near the belly button, where a part of the intestine or abdominal cavity tissue has pushed through the abdominal wall. Although common in infants and children, it can also occur among adults.

In a laparoscopic hernia repair, a surgeon makes small cuts near the pouch, inserting a laparoscope to monitor the surgery. Using surgical instruments, they gently place the abdominal tissue or the organ back in its place and sew the holes close. Sometimes a synthetic mesh material may be inserted to strengthen the weak area.
