General Surgery

General surgery is a surgical speciality that deals with a wide range of surgical procedures aimed at diagnosing and treating conditions in any region of the body. Medcy Hospitals has a proud team of skilled general surgeons who carry out a range of surgeries to relieve your pain and ensure your physical well-being with care and accurate guidance.

General Surgery Procedures at Medcy Hospitals

There are different types of surgical procedures that patients can undergo at Medcy Hospitals. Some of them include

Hernia Repair

Hernias occur when a tissue or organ protrudes through a weak area in the connective tissue or the surrounding muscle. Two types of hernia surgeries can occur depending on the condition – open and laparoscopic surgery.

  • Open surgery: The surgeon makes an incision and gently pushes the hernia back into place. They may tie it off or remove it. Afterwards, they will close the weakened area of the muscle using stitches.
  • Laparoscopic surgery: A harmless gas inflates the abdomen to get a clearer view of the organs. Small incisions are made near the hernia, and a laparoscope is inserted. The surgeon uses the images from the laparoscope to guide the hernia repair with mesh.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure which uses small incisions to insert a laparoscope – a flexible tube with a light and a camera – into the body to diagnose and treat conditions. It is also called a keyhole surgery since the incisions made are about half an inch long, as opposed to the long 6 to 12-inch cuts it would take for the same procedure. A laparoscopic is much more beneficial since it is less painful, recovery is quicker, and less scarring occurs.

Nephrolithotripsy (Kidney Stones Removal)

Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy is a procedure to remove larger kidney stones that cannot be removed through other procedures. An incision in the back allows the surgeon to insert a nephroscope in the kidney. The kidney stone is broken up using high-frequency sound waves and vacuumed using a suction machine.

Appendectomy

When the appendix becomes inflamed and painful, an appendectomy is conducted to remove the appendix from the body before it ruptures. Appendectomy is an emergency procedure. The surgeon can carry out two types of appendectomy. An open appendectomy requires a long 2 to 4-inch incision in the abdomen to remove the appendix. In a laparoscopic appendectomy, small incisions are made to insert a laparoscope which removes the appendix.

Colon and Rectal Surgery

A colorectal surgery aims to diagnose and treat conditions of the lower digestive tract consisting of the colon, rectum, and anus. The surgery is usually recommended for treating conditions like haemorrhoids, diverticulitis, cancer, and more.

Varicose Vein Removal

Varicose veins can be removed through varicose vein stripping and ligation surgery. During the procedure, the affected vein is tied off and removed through two small incisions, one near the groin and the other around the knee. The surgery does not affect blood flow in the legs, as the veins deep within the legs take over the damaged veins’ role.

Thyroid Removal

A thyroidectomy removes the entire thyroid gland or a part of it to eliminate thyroid nodules, goitre and to treat thyroid cancer. There are two types of thyroidectomies – total and partial. The surgery can be conducted through incisions in the throat or directly through the mouth, which is scarless.

Fistula Surgery

Fistulas are abnormal connections between organs, typically involving the gastrointestinal or urinary tracts. Three types of fistula surgery can be recommended based on the location of the fistula – Anal or perianal fistulas, urinary tract, and gastrointestinal fistula surgery.
